About
Founded in 2014 by ceramic artist Sarah Sauer, Guten Co. (meaning “Good Company” in German) is a San Antonio-based studio dedicated to producing functional and sculptural ceramics that merge classic craftsmanship with contemporary, design-forward aesthetics. Production in the studio spans tableware, lighting and fine art sculptures, all handcrafted with a signature precision, warmth and restraint. Over the past decade, the studio has become known for its distinctive forms in a curated color palette with every piece shaped, glazed, and finished by hand in the downtown San Antonio studio. Using a combination of wheel throwing, hand building and casting, each piece is thoughtfully constructed to be lived with and last until it reaches heirloom status.
Sarah Sauer was born and raised in central Texas, where she discovered her creative home in the process-driven mediums of ceramics and printmaking. Her current ceramic work is influenced by brutalist architecture and 20th century German design philosophy, both deep reservoirs of inspiration for the combination of structure and material. Most recently, alongside her production ceramics, Sauer has begun producing fine art bas-reliefs and experimental vessels - work that shifts away from utility and allows for a more unrestricted approach to materials and process.
